Genetic analysis of murine malaria

The project included a genome-wide polymorphism questionnaire using microsatellite markers performed on 10 WDIS. Comparisons of these strains to laboratory inbred strains validated a higher rate of polymorphism among the WDIS. We deduce that these WDIS signify repositories of unique naturally occurring genetic variability that could turn out to be important for the research of complex phenotypes.

Hormone replacement therapy: benefits and adverse effects

Several researches indicate that estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) is an efficient remedy for vasomotor symptoms, insomnia and vaginal dryness. Benefits are also shown on lipid patterns and on the incidence of osteoporotic fractures. As ERT estrogen replacement therapy enhances the risk of endometrial

Found in translation: A comparison of American, German, and Japanese mathematics texts and exercises

This study compares mathematics textbooks and accompanying exercises from Germany, Japan, and the United States. Two grade-9 mathematics texts from both Germany and the United States are investigated in addition to one Japanese text. The textbooks are compared using a number of characteristics: size, weight, organizational structure, page length and certain formatting measures.

Kinematics and Deformation History of the Cross Lake Greenstone Belt

Greenstone belts are a common feature of Archean terrains. However, the tectonic environment for Archean earth remains in hot debate: did vertical or horizontal crustal movement dominate the Archean Eon? Small-scale structural analysis is applied to a late Archean greenstone belt in the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield in order to test the two end member hypotheses.

Physical training in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease – COPD

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, COPD, places a substantial burden of disability on the growing number of patients and causes large costs for the society. Tobacco smoke is the most important risk factor. Progressive exertional dyspnea is the major symptom which leads to diminished physical and social activities, reduced physical capacity and decreased health related quality of life, HRQoL.

Computation of Parameters in some Mathematical Models

In computational science it is common to describe dynamic systems by mathematical models in forms of differential or integral equations. These models may contain parameters that have to be computed for the model to be complete. For the special type of ordinary differential equations studied in this thesis, the resulting parameter estimation problem is a separable nonlinear least squares problem with equality constraints.

Modifying an architecture for interface customisation support

This work is an investigation of how a software architecture can be changed in order to improve the support of the creation of a customised user interface. The parts of Symbian OS that are of interest for the work are described in detail. Then a comparison of the user interfaces of four different mobile devices is made, in order to get a picture of what the interfaces of such devices could look like.

Leaking rear axles: a design for Six Sigma project at General Motors

The issue for the project is that some of the rear axles for General Motors GMT800 and GMT900 are found to be leaking. Most of the leaks are spotted already at the paint facility Paint Tech International (PTI), but some make it all the way to the customer before being spotted. The leaks are normally discovered as a wet spot around the vent tube area on the differential, or in more severe cases as a puddle of lube around the pinion flange.
