Engineering Feelings of Quality

There is an increasing emphasis on developing systematical research approaches for design of products that appeal to people’s emotions and values. This thesis proposes methodological developments for investigating people’s subjective emotional needs and values towards quality and explores interactions of related physical design attributes for product design.

Electric Fields for Surface Design and Chemical Analysis

This thesis deals with the use of electric fields for evaluation and control of chemical systems. An electric field can result in the flow of charge across an interface between a metal and a solution, by means of chemical reactions. This interplay between electricity and chemistry, i.e. electrochemistry, is a field of crucial importance both within research and industry.

Robust design: Accounting for uncertainties in engineering

This thesis concerns optimization of structures considering various uncertainties. The overall objective is to find methods to create solutions that are optimal both in the sense of handling the typical load case and minimising the variability of the response, i.e. robust optimal designs.Traditionally optimized structures may show a tendency of being sensitive to small perturbations in the design or loading conditions, which of course are inevitable.

Geometric Issues in Spatial Indexing

We address a number of geometric issues in spatial indexes. One area of interest is spherical data. Two main examples are the locations of stars in the sky and geodesic data. The first part of this dissertation addresses some of the challenges in handling spherical data with a spatial database.

A low-power second-order sampling receiver for Bluetooth

The main goal of this thesis is to investigate the feasibility of a quadrature radio frequency receiver front-end using a second-order sampling topology in CMOS. Second-order sampling combines subsampling with a non-uniform sampling scheme. This non-uniform sampling scheme comprises of two uniform sampling streams with a small time delay between both streams, which allows the generation of an I and Q channel.

Computational Musculoskeletal Biomechanics in Cross Country Skiing

The goal of this project is to explore the possibilities for computational musculoskeletal biomechanics in cross-country skiing. Typically, research on cross-country skiing biomechanics relies largely on experimental testing alone. Trying an alternative strategy, this thesis looks at the options of using computational musculoskeletal biomechanics for cross-country skiing. So far as the writer understands, this has not been done before.Cross-country skiing is both quick and effective, and the whole body is employed to build movement.

New Methodology for Optical Sensing and Analysis

This project explains the investigation I’ve accomplished, and partially will do, during my time as a PhD learner in the laboratory of Applied Optics. Caused by circumstances beyond the range of this book, this includes three quite diverse projects. The first 2, including gas sensing and measuring on paper with ellipsometry, have been discontinued, while the third one, measuring fluorescence with a computer screen and web camera, is in full progress and will be until I complete my studies.
